T-Web's Best in Da Sip - Top 2023 Players to watch this Post season
With the Mississippi Basketball season nearing an end we dive into what we feel are some of the top guys to watch this postseason. If you have a chance to catch any quarterfinal matchups or Finals here are few guys you will see.
MRA 6’ Josh Hubbard
Hubbard recently surpassed Robert Woodard as the all-time scoring leader in the state of Mississippi. On top of breaking that record he picked up another MAIS 6A State Championship over the weekend. With the season coming to a close in the next week, fans should be piling in to catch him as they battle for the MAIS Overall Championship. He’s worth the price of admission.
Starkville 6’6 Makhi Myles
Starkville is looking really polished as of lately and it starts with Makhi. He’s been on a rampage and scoring well all season. Whatever they need him to do, rather it’s post up or knock down 3s, he’s been able to deliver. If he can continue this high level of play its hard not to picture Starkville lifting the gold ball next weekend.
Florence 6’3 Carter Mullins
Mullins is having a great senior season and will look to get Florence back to the big house. Everything they are doing starts with him and he continues to win games for them. Last season they made it to the final 4 and they’re one game away from doing the same this season. Another big night from him will clinch that berth, but he will have a tough outing with Hattiesburg waiting Friday night.
Clinton Christian Academy 5’8 KJ Sykes
KJ is one of the best PG’s in the state. After picking up his 2nd MAIS 3A State Championship last weekend, he will be looking to capture the MAIS overall championship. He’s fun to watch and can get a bucket in a variety of ways. If CCA and MRA matchup in the overall tournament we can expect an exciting game! If you are anywhere in the metro area be sure to catch him play this week.
Biloxi 6’ James Turner
Turner will be looking to help get Biloxi over the hump this post season. He’s having a great season and brings a lot of toughness and buckets for Biloxi. He defends at a high level and can get a bucket whenever he wants. After a final 4 exit last season, Turner just might be the piece needed to get Biloxi to the finals.
Biloxi 6’3 Duran Parish
Parish is the engine that makes Biloxi go. He’s electric in the open court and can make something out of nothing for Biloxi when they need it. This season he has the help he needs to make that state run. After his heroic effort to hold off Meridian, it seems that this might be their season. A highly anticipated final 4 matchup with Starkville awaits if both can win this week.
Pontotoc 6’3 Tyler Shephard
Shephard started the season off putting up crazy numbers and paced Pontotoc to a great start. He’s having one of the best senior seasons we’ve seen in awhile, and is by far the most improved player this season. He plays above the rim and causes havoc for opposing defenses. With Zane Tipler going down late in the season, it put just a little more pressure on the other two members of Pototoc’s big 3. Be sure to get eyes on Pontotoc as they are one of the favorites to win it in 4A.
Pontotoc 6’1 Adin Johnson
Johnson has came up big the last few games for pontotoc. He’s arguably the best shooter in the state. He has the 3pt percentage and film to back that statement up. Like I mentioned earlier Zane going down for Pontotoc put more of a work load on Johnson and Shephard but they have delivered . They will need strong performances to get passed Clarksdale this week.
SE Lauderdale 6’3 Demondre Graham
Graham is having a great season so far. He is putting up solid numbers and winning games for SE. He recently picked up the 3A Mr. Basketball award and will look to led his team back to the big house. Graham is one that we’ve seen progress over the course of his high school career. Winning a state championship will be a full circle moment for him. They have the chance to rematch Booneville in the Big House if both can keep winning.
Horn Lake 6’1 Kyle Pernell
Pernell is one that popped on the scene late last season. He’s propelled himself to the top this season with his productivity. Pernell is a very skilled guard who can get to the rim at will, shoot the long ball, and make plays for others. He was picked to play in the MS/AL game next month and is looking to make a run with his team. They have a tough game coming up this week against Starkville; but if we have learned anything about the twins and Horn Lake this year it would be that they have niche for winning the big games.
Starkville 5’11 Connor Rogers
Rogers is another senior that emerged into one of the top guys in the 2023 class. Starkville had quite a few games where he came through big for them to snatch some wins. He can score the ball from anywhere on the floor and defends at a high level. If Starkville expect to win it all they will need Rogers clicking on all cylinders as well!
