T-Web's Best in Da Sip- Top 2024 Players to watch this Postseason
With the Mississippi Basketball season nearing an end we dive into what we feel are some of the top guys to watch this postseason. If you have a chance to catch any quarterfinal matchups or Finals here are few guys you will see.
Raymond 6’9 EJ Paymon Jr.
Raymond have continued their streak of success this season even after losing key players to graduation last season. EJ has led the charge for Raymonds quest to get back to the Big House. He recently picked up the 4A Mr. Basketball award and helped Raymond punch their ticket to the final 4. Paymon is a skilled forward who has a unique skillset. He can score inside or out and his size will cause problems for anybody that steps on the court with Raymond these next 2 rounds.
Olive Branch 6’ PG Jay Tyler
Tyler surpassed 1,000 points earlier this season and has continued to be the bucket getter and winner that earned him a spot on the 2022 Dandy Dozen list. This new look Olive Branch squad is young but they hold the experience needed to get back to the Big House. Their key players all played big minutes on last years 6A runner-up squad. Tyler is easily a top 3 scorer in the state and does it with ease. If you are able to get out over the next few days you won’t be disappointed with his style of play.
Port Gibson 6’3 Kam Brown
The transition from 5A to 3A basketball can sometimes be a challenge with good players getting more attention from defenses, but Kam has adjusted well. Brown is a big bodied guard who makes a living shooting Mid-range shots and getting to the basket. His 3 ball is much improved and he’s one of the top players in the junior class. Port Gibson have some athletes that help carry the load and they should be a tough out for anybody they matchup with in these next few rounds.
West Union 6’1 Greer Manning
Manning is one that most won’t know, but that will all change next week when they enter the Big House. He’s been one of the better players in the 2024 class since the 8th grade. Manning is more of a Swiss Army knife with his ability to do many things well. He can shoot the 3, mid-range, and get to the basket. West Union have been building this squad for the last two years and now its time they reap the benefits of the process.
Clinton Christian Academy 6’2 Tre Alexander
Alexander just recently won another MAIS 3A State Championship after missing out on postseason play last season. He has so much to his game, and he’s beginning to look like a well polished guard. He can shoot the 3 ball, has a great mid-range pull up, and is now jumping out of the gym. A few weeks ago he connected on the end of an alley hoop that was nominated for dunk of the year. CCA picked up a win last night to advance in the MAIS Overall Tournament. If they continue to win the matchup with Josh Hubbard and MRA will be one to watch.
Cleveland Central 5’10 Tayler Berryhill
Berryhill is one of the best PG’s in the state. He already holds an offer from Delta State University. He does a great job of getting his team going. He can shoot the long ball, and finishes well around the basket. Cleveland Central have a young team that is now starting to gel at the right time. They take on Provine Saturday night in a game that will be fun to watch. Look for the matchup with JJ Watkins to bring out the best in Berryhill.
Provine 5’7 JJ Watkins
Here’s another stellar PG in the 2024 class. Watkins does a great job of getting Provine into their offense and controls the game at an elite level. He can get to the basket when needed or stop and pop for a middy. He puts pressure on opposing guards on both ends of the floor and never lets them take a break. It will be fun to watch Watkins and Berryhill battle it out at the PG spot Saturday night.
